Volunteer Literacy Tutors at CNLC

Volunteer tutors at Carlton Neighbourhood Learning Centre support adult learners with their literacy development by:

Assisting classroom teachers during our daytime English as an Additional Language Classes.
Working one on one with an adult literacy learner for an hour or more a week at CNLC, the local library or other community venues.

To Be a Volunteer Literacy Tutor You Need

Passion & enthusiasm for learning & teaching

Understanding & respect for learners from diverse backgrounds

Capacity to develop a learning program based on adult learner’s needs and level of skill

Willingness to commit an hour a week for a minimum of 10 weeks

Your learner’s activities and needs may include:

Writing emails and text messages
Paying bills
Form filling such as Centrelink
Support in understanding the Australian way of life
Finding and reading community information
Understanding Medicine labels
Learning to read stories to preschool children
Getting a Learner’s permit
Learning English using computers
Helping to understand course material for a TAFE course

Each session you run will also include exercises and activities to develop spelling, reading and writing strategies and have a routine structure.

A Volunteer Tutor Training Course of 3 X 2hr sessions is run each semester for new tutors. On completion of the course you will be matched with an adult literacy learner.
